India faces grain production risks due to uneven monsoon and El Nino

India faces potential threats to grain production due to uneven monsoon distribution and the influence of El Nino. While some regions experience heavy rainfall, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) reports significant rainfall deficits in key agricultural states, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

These five states contribute approximately 32 percent of India's total food grain production. The lack of timely and consistent rainfall in these regions could lead to a decline in Kharif crop yields, impacting national food security, rising food prices, and farmer incomes.

In Telangana, weather experts predict a shift toward hotter and more humid conditions over the next 10 days as rainfall decreases. Due to El Nino, September rainfall in the state is expected to be below normal, with dry conditions likely persisting through the first half of the month.
