India monsoon rains cause fatalities and massive damage in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand
Heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread devastation across several Indian states. In Himachal Pradesh, the death toll from monsoon-related incidents and road accidents reached 259 between June 30 and September 1. Property damage in the state is estimated to exceed Rs 1,200 crore, with significant losses reported by the Public Works Department and the Jal Shakti Vibhag. Approximately 150 roads remain blocked, and hundreds of power transformers and water supply schemes have been disrupted.
Uttarakhand has also faced severe impacts, with at least eight deaths reported in a 24-hour period due to landslides, house collapses, and flash floods. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Dehradun, Nainital, and Bageshwar, warning of continued thunderstorms and intense rain through early September.
In Assam, landslides killed four people, while torrential rains have caused flooding and landslides in Odisha, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Kerala recorded a 22 per cent rainfall deficiency during the southwest monsoon from June to August. Nationally, India experienced its warmest August since 1901, with a monsoon deficit of approximately 14 per cent as El Niño conditions continue to influence weather patterns.
