India faces growing demand for Forward Deployed Engineers

A report by Scaler and CyberMedia Research (CMR) indicates a significant surge in demand for Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) in India. As enterprises transition AI from experimentation to real-world production, they require engineers who can bridge the gap between technical innovation and business implementation.

While 88% of Indian enterprises expect demand for FDE capabilities to grow by 2030, the role currently accounts for only 1% of the country’s engineering workforce. The report highlights a substantial skills and awareness gap: 58% of engineers expressed interest in transitioning to FDE roles, yet 90% were unaware of structured pathways to acquire the necessary skills.

FDEs are distinguished by their ability to combine software engineering with AI implementation, customer engagement, and production deployment. The financial incentives for these roles are high, with 80% of engineers in explicit FDE positions reporting annual incomes between INR 40 lakh and INR 1 crore.
