Indian industrial and technology workforce skill gaps

Overview

Reports indicate growing workforce readiness and skill shortages across different sectors of the Indian economy.

In the solar industry, a Mercom India study highlights a significant talent gap as the sector expands. The report suggests that fresh graduates lack the practical exposure, technical skills, and commercial knowledge required for roles in manufacturing, project development, and engineering. In the manufacturing segment specifically, 74% of industry respondents noted that new graduates require between three and 12 months of training to become productive.

Simultaneously, the technology sector is facing a shortage of Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) as enterprises integrate artificial intelligence. A report by Scaler and CyberMedia Research (CMR) notes that while 88% of Indian enterprises expect demand for these roles to increase by 2030, only 1% of current engineers occupy such positions.

FDEs are characterized by their ability to combine software engineering with AI implementation, customer engagement, and production deployment. While 58% of engineers expressed interest in transitioning to these roles, 90% remain unaware of structured pathways for upskilling in applied AI and production deployment. The roles offer significant financial incentives, with 80% of engineers in explicit FDE positions reporting annual incomes between INR 40 lakh and INR 1 crore.
