India food safety authorities crack down on substandard products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has prohibited the sale of Compounded Hing manufactured by Everest Food Products Private Limited and Laljee Godhoo and Company (LG Brand Unit). Laboratory testing revealed that these products were substandard, specifically failing to meet the minimum requirement of five per cent alcohol soluble extract. In the case of the LG Brand Unit, raw hing samples also showed starch levels between 15 per cent and 32 per cent, significantly exceeding the one per cent limit.

In a separate food safety incident in Surat, officials from the Surat Municipal Corporation destroyed moldy sweets and spoiled cashew nuts at Kailash Sweet. The shop owner was fined ₹5,000 after white fungus was discovered on the products. Fresh samples have been sent for laboratory examination to determine if further legal proceedings under the Food Safety Act are necessary.
