India fuel prices remain unchanged despite rising global crude oil costs
Retail petrol and diesel prices in major Indian cities remained unchanged as of early September 2026, despite rising international crude oil prices. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have maintained steady rates at the pump, even as Brent crude moved closer to the $100 per barrel mark and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) saw increases.
Fuel costs in India vary by city due to differences in state-level taxation, Value Added Tax (VAT), and local levies. For instance, petrol prices in Hyderabad reached approximately ₹115.69 per litre, while New Delhi rates were around ₹102.12 per litre. Diesel prices were highest in Thiruvananthapuram at roughly ₹104.40 per litre.
Market analysts note that while global crude volatility—driven by tensions in the Middle East and concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz—poses a risk to domestic costs, retail prices have not yet reflected these upward trends. The stability in domestic prices offers temporary relief to consumers amidst fluctuating global energy markets.
