India economic sectors show growth in defense, chemicals, and GCC services

India is experiencing significant shifts across several key economic sectors. In the industrial and defense sectors, defense exports reached a record ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26, a massive increase from previous years. Simultaneously, the chemicals industry is targeting exports of up to USD 81 billion by 2030 to reduce import dependence.

In the services and technology sector, state-level policies for Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are projected to create between 1.1 million and 1.18 million jobs and establish approximately 1,300 to 1,380 new centres by 2031. This growth is driving substantial demand for office real estate, with GCCs accounting for roughly 43% of office leasing in the first half of 2026. However, this expansion faces a talent crunch, with studies indicating that shortages in AI and digital skills are causing project delays and increasing costs.

Trade data for July shows merchandise exports rose 19.5% year-on-year to $44.24 billion, though the merchandise trade deficit widened to $118.6 billion for the April-July period. Additionally, India is strengthening agricultural ties, with significant urea imports from Algeria helping to diversify fertilizer supplies.
