India defence sector export growth
Overview
India’s defence sector has seen a significant rise in exports, reaching a record ₹38,424 crore in the 2025-26 financial year. This growth represents a substantial increase from the ₹686 crore recorded in 2013-14. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh noted that the country has transitioned from focusing solely on domestic security to becoming an “emerging power in global defence manufacturing.”
This expansion is supported by domestic production, which rose to ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, driven by initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India. Public sector entities contributed approximately 76 per cent of this production, while the private sector accounted for 24 per cent. The government has set a target for defence exports to reach ₹50,000 crore by 2029.
