India government addresses E20 petrol mileage and compatibility concerns
The Indian government and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have addressed concerns regarding reduced vehicle mileage following the nationwide shift toward E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol. The Ministry stated that E20 has undergone extensive testing for engine durability, material compatibility, and corrosion resistance.
Officials clarified that E20 alone is not responsible for mileage changes, noting that real-world fuel economy is heavily influenced by driving habits, traffic conditions, vehicle maintenance, tire pressure, and air conditioning usage. While the government has acknowledged that some vehicles may experience a 3% to 5% reduction in fuel economy with E20, they emphasized that overall performance depends on broader driving conditions.
State-run oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, have rejected allegations of fuel contamination. Nationwide testing reportedly found no evidence of high chloride levels or moisture in E20 samples.
In response to motorist concerns about engine compatibility and mileage loss in older vehicles, a new platform called E0 Finder has been launched. The app helps drivers locate petrol pumps that sell premium fuel with zero ethanol content, specifically targeting public-sector outlets.
