India hikes diesel export tax amid rising petrol and diesel prices

On 17 June 2026 the Indian government announced an increase in the special additional excise duty (SAED) on diesel exports to Rs 14 per litre, up from Rs 13.5, and raised the SAED on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to Rs 13.5 per litre, up from Rs 9.5. The export duty on petrol remained at Rs 1.5 per litre. These tax changes were introduced while domestic fuel prices continued to climb.

Retail prices across major Indian cities showed petrol ranging from about Rs 102 to Rs 115 per litre and diesel from Rs 95 to Rs 103 per litre. Specific city rates on 18 June 2026 included Delhi (petrol ₹102.12, diesel ₹95.20), Mumbai (petrol ₹111.18, diesel ₹97.83), Kolkata (petrol ₹113.47, diesel ₹99.82) and others. The adjustments come amid global crude‑oil price volatility linked to Middle‑East tensions, although recent US‑Iran peace talks briefly lowered international oil benchmarks.
