India Holds BRICS Security Conclave in New Delhi to Prep September Summit

India hosted a two‑day BRICS security conclave in New Delhi beginning on Monday, chaired by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Senior security officials from the bloc, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu and Iran's Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Nezamipour, attended.

Delegates discussed a range of traditional and non‑traditional security challenges. Topics included the war in Ukraine, unrest in West Asia, South‑Asian tensions such as Pakistan‑Afghanistan hostilities, and cross‑border terrorism affecting Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting also examined the impact of emerging technologies on national security and reviewed progress of BRICS working groups on counter‑terrorism and information‑technology security.

The conclave aims to lay the groundwork for the BRICS summit scheduled for September in India. Since its 2024 expansion, the bloc now comprises eleven major emerging economies, representing roughly 40 % of global GDP and about a quarter of world trade, increasing its influence on global governance and security cooperation.
