India, Indonesia, and Japan develop trilateral defence framework

India, Indonesia, and Japan are developing a trilateral defence framework to enhance security cooperation within the Indo-Pacific region. The initiative focuses on expanding engagement through military exercises, defence technology, and maritime cooperation.

Recent developments include a $600 million defence package between India and Indonesia involving BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, as well as bilateral naval exercises in the Andaman Sea. Japan has also increased its presence through deployments such as fighter aircraft for Exercise Veer Guardian in India. Potential areas for the new trilateral framework include maritime security, humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and maritime domain awareness initiatives.
