India initiates talent hunt roadmap for 2036 Olympics

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called for an accelerated talent identification roadmap to prepare Indian athletes for the 2036 Olympics. During the 63rd Governing Body Meeting of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Mandaviya emphasized that the groundwork for India's decade-long sporting ambitions must begin immediately.

The proposed strategy involves a structured scouting system across schools, districts, and colleges to build a comprehensive talent repository. This process will occur in two stages: first, identifying high-performing athletes at state and district levels, and second, assessing their potential for elite-level progression based on fitness, passion, and ability.

This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of a nationwide sports talent hunt. The movement also seeks to address gaps in underrepresented disciplines, including para-sports. For instance, in the field of Boccia, athletes like Sachin Chamaria, the first Indian to qualify for the World Championships in the sport, are highlighting the untapped potential of precision-based para-sports that prioritize strategy and accuracy over physical strength.
