India Issues Severe Weather Alerts for 15 States as Deep Depression Triggers Heavy Rain

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread alert for heavy rain, strong winds and possible floods across 15 Indian states after a deep depression developed over the Bay of Bengal. The agency warned that wind speeds could reach 60‑70 km/h, posing risks to life, property and infrastructure. The most affected areas include Delhi‑NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, as well as the Himalayan and northeastern states where landslides and rapid river rises are possible.

The alert advises residents to avoid low‑lying, water‑logged areas, for farmers to drain fields to protect crops, and for fishermen to stay out of deep water. Disaster response teams (NDRF, SDRF) are on high alert, and travel advisories have been issued for hill‑region tourists. Forecasts predict continued heavy rainfall from July 18‑23, with particularly intense showers expected in Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, and parts of Rajasthan.

Authorities have urged the public to stay indoors during severe storms, secure property, and follow local guidance to mitigate damage.
