India launches $13.25 billion semiconductor mission to advance chip technology

The Indian government has launched the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 2.0), approving approximately Rs 1,27,500 crore (around $13.25 billion) to build an integrated semiconductor ecosystem. While the first phase focused on establishing a base through ecosystem creation and early project execution, ISM 2.0 aims to deepen the country’s capabilities in chip design IP, equipment, materials, advanced packaging, R&D, and talent development.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that India currently possesses chip-making capabilities at the 40nm level. The government has set a strategic roadmap to achieve advanced nodes, specifically 7nm to 3nm technology, within the next eight years. This initiative is part of an aggressive push to make the nation self-sufficient in the semiconductor sector, which is projected to grow from its current $45–$50 billion valuation to between $100–$110 billion by 2030.
