India launches E85 ethanol fuel, says E20 cars will keep running

The Indian government introduced an E85 ethanol‑based fuel on World Environment Day, pricing it at about ₹82.12 per litre. The blend contains 80‑85 % ethanol and is intended solely for flex‑fuel vehicles that have engines and fuel systems designed for high ethanol content. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured the public that existing petrol and E20‑blended cars will continue to operate normally and that E85 will not replace regular fuel at stations.

He highlighted that E85 is roughly ₹20 cheaper per litre, can cut emissions by up to 61 %, boost farmer incomes, and reduce dependence on imported crude oil. Experts warned that using E85 in standard engines can damage fuel lines, rubber components and metal parts, leading to costly repairs. The rollout includes clear signage at pumps indicating that the fuel is for flex‑fuel vehicles only.
