India launches first Telecom Manufacturing Zone in Gwalior
India's Department of Telecommunications and the Madhya Pradesh government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on July 30 2026 to create the country's first Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior. The 350‑acre plug‑and‑play campus will be developed under a special‑purpose vehicle, with the state holding 51 % and the centre 49 % ownership. Phase‑I will receive about ₹500 crore of central assistance for core infrastructure.
Investment targets range from ₹2,000 crore in the first phase to ₹10,000‑12,000 crore across two phases, with companies such as Dixon Technologies, HFCL, Tejas Networks, VVDN and others pledging commitments. The zone is projected to create between 4,500 and 14,000 direct skilled jobs; the broader telecom Production‑Linked Incentive scheme has already generated 36,000 jobs. Officials say the hub will integrate manufacturing, research, testing and design for mobile phones, network equipment, fibre‑optic products, semiconductors and 5G/6G technologies, reducing current dependence on imported components (about 80 %). The project supports India's Make‑in‑India, Atmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India initiatives and aims to position the country as a global telecom manufacturing exporter.
