Overview

India’s communications minister announced that the 5G network now serves about 500 million users and set a target of one billion 5G users by 2030. The same briefing introduced the country’s first Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior, a 350‑acre plug‑and‑play campus for data‑centres, chip‑making and telecom equipment, with ₹493 crore (≈₹500 crore) earmarked for core infrastructure in Phase‑I. A memorandum of understanding signed on 30 July formalised the project, creating a special‑purpose vehicle in which the state holds 51 % and the centre 49 %. Investment commitments from firms such as Dixon Technologies, HFCL, Tejas Networks and VVDN total ₹2,000 crore in the first phase, with a longer‑term goal of ₹10‑12 billion, and the zone is expected to generate 4,500‑14,000 direct skilled jobs alongside the broader Production‑Linked Incentive scheme that has already created 36,000 jobs.

The government also launched the “Scale Without Boundaries” theme for the 10th India Mobile Congress (7‑10 Oct 2026), forecasting more than 150,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors to showcase 5G, emerging 6G, AI, satellite communications and quantum computing. Under the National Broadband Mission 2.0, average fixed‑broadband speed rose to 60.85 Mbps and rural internet penetration reached 48.31 % in FY 2025‑26, supported by 43,908 km of new fibre and upgrades in almost 14,000 Gram Panchayats. The initiative is positioned to reduce reliance on imported components (about 80 %), boost domestic manufacturing, attract investment, create jobs and advance the Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make‑in‑India and Digital India programmes.
