India mandates Aadhaar biometric authentication for LPG subsidies

Starting October 1, 2026, Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will become mandatory for domestic LPG consumers in India to continue receiving government subsidies. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has implemented this requirement to ensure subsidies reach eligible households, prevent the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial use, and identify duplicate or ineligible connections.

Consumers who have not completed the e-KYC or biometric authentication process by the deadline will not be denied gas refills, but they will be required to purchase cylinders at the full market price without the subsidy. As of September 19, approximately 27.43 crore active domestic consumers, representing about 89.9 percent of the total, had already completed the authentication.

Consumers can complete the BAA process through several channels, including during cylinder delivery by personnel, at gas distributor showrooms, or via mobile applications provided by oil marketing companies.
