India mandates Aadhaar biometric authentication for LPG subsidies

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced that Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will become mandatory for domestic LPG consumers to book refills at the regulated retail price with government subsidies, effective October 1, 2026.

This measure is designed to ensure that subsidies reach eligible households by preventing the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial use and by eliminating duplicate or ineligible connections. As of September 19, 2026, approximately 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, have already completed the authentication process. Consumers who have already completed BAA do not need to take further action.

Those who have not completed the process can do so through several channels: during cylinder delivery via a mobile app used by delivery personnel, at distributor showrooms, or through official oil marketing company (OMC) mobile applications such as IndianOil ONE, HelloBPCL, and HP PAY.

Consumers who are unable or unwilling to complete biometric authentication will not lose their LPG supply but will be required to pay the applicable market price without the government subsidy. Such consumers must register their preference through digital channels, including websites, mobile apps, WhatsApp chatbots, or IVRS systems. Depending on local availability, they may be supplied with 5-kg or 10-kg cylinders.
