India marks first anniversary of Operation Sindoor amid opposition calls for more transparency

On May 7, 2026 Indian leaders marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, a joint Army‑Air‑Navy strike campaign that lasted 88 hours and targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan‑administered Kashmir and Pakistan. The armed forces said nine stand‑off precision strikes—seven by the Army and two by the Air Force—were executed using largely indigenous systems such as Brahmos, Akash, advanced surveillance and targeting platforms, demonstrating India’s self‑reliance in defence.

Opposition politicians criticised the ruling BJP‑led government for keeping details of the operation secret, saying they had not been briefed on objectives or outcomes despite the mission’s strategic significance. While praising the Indian military’s capabilities, they called for greater transparency. The Home Minister described the operation as a historic mission that underscored India’s deterrent strength against its adversary.
