India marks Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026 with nationwide military tributes and motorcycle expedition

The Indian Army commemorated July 14, 1999 as the turning point of the Kargil War, recalling Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s declaration of Operation Vijay’s success and Pakistan’s subsequent withdrawal. The observance highlighted the recapture of strategic heights in Dras, Kargil and Batalik and honored the sacrifice of soldiers such as Captain Vikram Batra and Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey.

On July 14, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the 13‑day “Shaurya Vijay Yatra,” a motorcycle expedition from the National War Memorial in New Delhi to the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. The 28‑rider convoy, comprising serving and retired defence personnel and their families, will cover about 1,900 km through the Himalayas, stopping at major war memorials and carrying an urn of soil from the National War Memorial to be offered at Kargil. Senior military leaders, including the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of the Army Staff, attended the ceremony.
