India marks 27th Kargil Victory Day

Overview

India continued nationwide tributes on 26 July 2026 for the 27th Kargil Victory Day, commemorating the 1999 operation that reclaimed the Kargil heights. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Srinagar, visited Dras and addressed troops at a Shaurya Bhoj, stressing the Army’s readiness and the government’s self‑reliance drive in defence manufacturing. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice‑President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted messages on X praising the soldiers’ courage. Governors, including Assam’s Lakshman Prasad Acharya, urged support for martyrs’ families, and veteran‑outreach programmes were held at the Counter‑Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Vairengte along with events in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. State governments added concrete welfare measures. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a raise in financial assistance for families of martyrs from ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh and increased the special grant for Param Veer Chakra recipients. The state also proposed issuing gun licences to ex‑soldiers and launched an “Agni Veer Employment Cell” for veterans. In Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalia and Chief Minister Yum Nam Khemchand Singh paid respects at a memorial in Imphal. Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh laid wreaths, recalling the 527 soldiers who fell. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Army is fully equipped and ready to counter infiltration and proxy warfare. Veteran outreach extended to the Counter‑Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram, overseen by Major General Kulvir Singh, while the Rajya Sainik Board in Manipur, the Spearhead Division in Arunachal and the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands organised medical camps and cultural programmes. Prime Minister Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat address, linked the day to defence modernisation, citing the indigenously built INS Mahendragiri, the Pinaka guided rocket and the Khushka missile test.
