India Meteorological Department issues red and orange rain alerts for Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha and other states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of severe weather warnings as the southwest monsoon intensifies. Red alerts have been placed on districts in Gujarat (including Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Kutch, Mahesana, Patan and Sabarkantha) and Odisha (Anugul, Badrak, Devgarh, Dhenkanal, Kendrapara and Sambalpur). Orange warnings cover large parts of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh and several other states, while yellow alerts affect additional districts nationwide.

The department forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall within the next two to three hours, accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds of 40‑50 km/h, lightning and possible flash‑floods in low‑lying areas. Landslide risk is highlighted for hilly regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and the Western Ghats. Authorities have placed emergency teams on standby and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from water‑logged roads and rivers, and follow local directives.

Across more than 30 Indian states, the IMD advises heightened vigilance, rapid dissemination of updates and preparedness measures to mitigate potential flooding, road closures and damage to property.
