Bay of Bengal Deep Depression nears landfall in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
A deep depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal is approaching the North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts, with landfall expected near Kalingapatnam on the night of September 23. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching up to 75 kmph.
In Odisha, the East Coast Railway has activated 24-hour control rooms and intensified track monitoring to manage potential disruptions. Local authorities have also deployed disaster response teams and heavy machinery to mitigate risks of landslides and flooding. In Andhra Pradesh, educational institutions in several districts have been closed due to the weather threat.
The weather system is also impacting other regions. Sri Lanka is expected to receive significant rainfall, with some areas seeing more than 100 mm. Parts of Telangana are under red alerts for heavy rain, while Kerala has issued yellow alerts for multiple districts. Additionally, heavy rainfall is forecast for West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh as the system's influence spreads.
