India monsoon faces uneven rainfall and flood risks

India is experiencing a paradoxical monsoon season characterized by uneven rainfall patterns. While cumulative rainfall has largely remained below the long-term average, the country has still faced severe flooding and landslides, notably in Kerala. This phenomenon occurs when long dry spells are interrupted by intense cloudbursts.

The development of a potentially ‘super El Niño’ in the Pacific Ocean is expected to influence these patterns, as El Niño conditions are typically associated with weaker Indian monsoon rainfall. The India Meteorological Department had previously forecasted a below-normal season, and current data shows significant fluctuations in rainfall distribution across the region.

These extreme weather events pose significant risks to infrastructure and personal property. Flash floods can cause extensive damage to vehicles through engine failure, electrical system malfunctions, and interior degradation, highlighting the importance of comprehensive insurance coverage during the monsoon season.
