India Monsoon Health Guide: Home Remedy for Cough and Ayurvedic Diet Advice
During the monsoon season, a traditional home decoction—made with turmeric, basil leaves, cloves, black pepper, a pinch of salt and sugar—has been promoted in Madhubani as a quick, side‑effect‑free remedy for cold, cough and throat irritation. The brew is boiled for 10‑12 minutes, strained and consumed warm, with the claim that it eases congestion and phlegm within a day or two.
Ayurvedic nutrition experts advise limiting yogurt in the rainy months because its heavy, acidic nature can increase kapha (phlegm) and strain the already weakened digestion. Instead, buttermilk (chaas) is recommended as a lighter, probiotic drink, especially when seasoned with roasted cumin, black salt, ginger or mint. Those prone to frequent colds, sinus issues, or weak digestion are cautioned against regular yogurt consumption.
