India monsoon floods cause widespread casualties and destruction

Severe monsoon weather and heavy rainfall have triggered widespread flooding and landslides across multiple Indian states, causing significant loss of life, property, and agricultural damage.

In Himachal Pradesh, the death toll has reached 187, with cumulative losses estimated at nearly Rs 973 crore. The state faces ongoing threats from landslides and flash floods. In Odisha, over 5 lakh people have been affected, with more than 2 lakh evacuated to relief camps. The situation in Mayurbhanj remains critical as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for extremely heavy rain. In Kendrapara, approximately 400 students were stranded at a residential school due to rising river levels.

Assam continues to deal with the aftermath of flooding, with over 62,000 people affected and a death toll of 104. In Uttar Pradesh, rising levels of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saryu rivers have submerged vast agricultural lands, destroying essential crops. Meanwhile, Delhi has experienced significant urban flooding and traffic disruptions due to recurring drainage failures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Independence Day, expressing concern for those affected by these natural disasters and assuring families that the country stands with them.
