India opposition coalition confirms 23 parties for June 8 meeting

Twenty‑three opposition parties have confirmed they will attend the INDIA Janbandhan gathering at New Delhi’s Constitution Club on Monday, 8 June 2026, at noon. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh posted on X, "23 political parties have confirmed participation in the INDIA Janbandhan meeting at Constitution Club, New Delhi, Monday, June 8, 2026, at 12 noon," and TMC MP Derek O’Brien added, "Meeting with a common purpose and clear intent. INDIA united."

The meeting is intended to shape a joint strategy ahead of the 2029 general elections and to coordinate criticism of Prime Minister Modi’s government on issues such as price rises, alleged attacks on opposition leaders and foreign‑policy concerns. Some parties, notably the DMK, will boycott the session after alleging a "betrayal" by Congress, while the AAP has publicly distanced itself from the bloc. The CPI(M) also expressed displeasure over comments suggesting a left‑BJP understanding in Kerala, prompting a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Organisers see the gathering as a step to deepen coordination among the diverse opposition after recent state assembly defeats in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
