India opposition INDIA bloc tensions

Overview

After the Tamil Nadu assembly election, the DMK youth wing blamed the Congress for “betrayal” over its participation in the TVK government, while the CPI(M) also accused Congress of weakening secular unity. The Left called for a revival of the opposition INDIA bloc, criticizing Congress’s overtures to other parties.

In early June, internal strains grew. The CPI(M) demanded clarification from Congress on alleged secret deals with the BJP in Kerala, and the DMK announced a boycott of an upcoming bloc meeting. The INDIA bloc convened on 8 June in New Delhi, adopting a five‑point coordination strategy, yet senior DMK and AAP leaders stayed away and CPI(M) MP John Brittas rebuked Congress for hints of a left‑BJP understanding.

Later that month, the DMK formally charged Rahul Gandhi with betraying Tamil Nadu allies, reinforcing its boycott, while the CPI(M) held a Politburo meeting to analyse its Kerala loss and the BJP’s historic West Bengal win.

On 15 July, the CPI(M) acknowledged campaign lapses in Kerala, admitting errors in candidate selection, an arrogant tone, and mishandling of local issues such as the Ayyappa Sangamam and the Vellappally controversy. Party general secretary M.A. Baby announced a corrective process, including an extended state‑committee meeting in September to review failures and consider leadership changes in Kerala and West Bengal. The acknowledgment underscores ongoing friction and the search for cohesion within the INDIA bloc.

Across these months, the alliance continues to struggle with accusations, boycotts, and strategic disagreements, reflecting deep‑seated tensions as it seeks a unified front against the BJP‑led NDA.
