India outlines roadmap for sustainable mobility leadership

The 66th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) focused on India’s strategy to achieve global leadership in sustainable mobility by 2047. Government officials and industry leaders discussed accelerating the transition toward cleaner fuels, including electric vehicles, biofuels, and green hydrogen.

Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister, emphasized the need to strengthen charging infrastructure, transition heavy vehicles to electric power, and establish India as a global manufacturing hub for advanced mobility technologies. Kamran Rizvi, Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, noted that the industry is moving toward electric mobility over the next decade and stressed the importance of becoming technology inventors.

Additionally, V Umashankar, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, highlighted the PARIVARTAN scheme for commercial vehicles in the Delhi-NCR region. From the industry perspective, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. CEO Hisashi Takeuchi noted that GST reforms have improved the affordability of vehicle ownership in the country.
