India political dispute intensifies over voter list revision
Political tensions in India have escalated regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Union Minister J. P. Nadda accused the opposition ‘Indi Alliance’ of attempting to create “confusion and chaos” by spreading falsehoods about the process, despite the Election Commission of India (ECI) debunking their claims.
Nadda alleged that opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Mamata Banerjee, are working to undermine autonomous constitutional institutions. He characterized the opposition's actions as a “toolkit mentality” aimed at obstructing national progress due to a lack of concrete policy.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu defended the ECI, stating that official records confirm the SIR was a collective institutional decision rather than the action of a single individual. This follows allegations raised by Rahul Gandhi questioning whether the decision was unilateral.
The Election Commission clarified that while individual commissioners may express differing opinions during deliberations, all final decisions, including the SIR orders issued in 2025 and scheduled through 2026, were made through unanimous institutional approval. The Commission noted that the Supreme Court upheld the initial SIR order on May 27, 2026.
