India voter list revision sparks protests and political clashes
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has triggered significant political tension and public demonstrations in India. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has led protests, including a demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The CJP has characterized the movement as a ‘Gen Z uprising’ fueled by social media, though it has garnered support from older generations as well.
In response to the agitation, the Supreme Court of India intervened, emphasizing that peaceful protesters cannot be illegally detained and that journalists and lawyers must be permitted to perform their duties. This follows allegations from CJP leaders that police detained protesters without formal notice and seized mobile phones.
Politically, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defended the SIR process as a necessary purification of voter lists to correct errors. BJP leaders, including Madan Rathore and Shrikant Sharma, have accused the opposition of attempting to create chaos and instability. The BJP has criticized the Congress party’s methods, suggesting that large-scale demonstrations to meet election officials are inappropriate and that institutional protocols should be followed instead.
