India protests erupt over alleged voter list irregularities

Protests are spreading across India following allegations of widespread irregularities in the voter list through the ‘Special Intensive Revision’ (SIR) process. Demonstrators claim that millions of voters, particularly from Muslim, minority, and marginalized communities, have been systematically removed from the rolls. In Tamil Nadu, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay, joined the ‘Democracy Protection’ protests organized by the Congress-led INDIA alliance in Chennai.

Critics and opposition leaders have characterized the electoral manipulation as a ‘democratic massacre’ intended to benefit the BJP. While BJP leaders have criticized the movements, accusing the opposition of attempting to create chaos or conspiring with foreign powers to destabilize the nation, legal experts argue that expressing dissatisfaction with the government is a fundamental democratic right. The protests have expanded from Chennai to include demonstrations in New Delhi.
