India reaches 552 GW installed energy capacity with 54% non-fossil fuel share

India's total installed energy capacity has reached 552 GW as of July 2026, a significant increase from 249 GW in 2014. Non-fossil fuel sources now account for 300.50 GW, representing over 54 percent of the total capacity.

Solar energy has become the largest component of India's renewable capacity, reaching 164.59 GW. In 2025, India emerged as the world's second-largest solar growth market, adding over 37 GW of capacity, surpassing the 34 GW added by the United States. The PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has facilitated rooftop solar installations for 51.58 lakh households, with approximately 19 lakh homes now reporting zero electricity bills.

Wind energy remains a vital part of the renewable expansion, with India ranking fourth globally in installed wind power capacity at 58.14 GW. The sector saw a record annual increase of 6.05 GW in fiscal year 2025–26. Additionally, domestic wind turbine manufacturing capacity has grown to approximately 24 GW, achieving 70–80 percent indigenization of key components.
