India rejects Pakistan's UN claims over Indus Waters Treaty

India's Ministry of External Affairs has formally responded to a letter sent by Pakistan to the United Nations Security Council regarding the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan reportedly attempted to use a recent decision by the Court of Arbitration to claim that India is violating the 1960 treaty by placing it in abeyance.

India has rejected the arbitration court's decision, stating that the body was not constituted in accordance with the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty. Consequently, India maintains that the ruling is not binding and that its sovereign decisions regarding hydroelectric projects will remain unaffected.

The Indian government accused Pakistan of spreading misinformation and using false propaganda to gain international recognition for its claims. This diplomatic tension follows India's decision to suspend the treaty's application following a terror attack in Pahalgam in April 2025, a move India maintains is linked to Pakistan's failure to end cross-border terrorism.
