India reports ₹7.10 lakh crore fiscal deficit and rising external debt
India's fiscal and external debt figures for the 2026-27 period show significant movement in both domestic deficit and foreign obligations. According to government data, the fiscal deficit reached ₹7.10 lakh crore during the first five months of FY27 (April-August), representing 41.9 per cent of the full-year target. The central government has set a total fiscal deficit target of 4.3 per cent of GDP for the year.
Total expenditure for the period reached ₹20,77,958 crore, with significant allocations toward interest payments and major subsidies. To fund requirements in the second half of the fiscal year, the government plans to borrow ₹7.86 lakh crore, which includes ₹15,000 crore through Sovereign Green Bonds.
On the external front, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data indicates that India's external debt rose to USD 778.2 billion at the end of the June 2026 quarter, an increase of USD 15.4 billion from March. Despite this rise, the debt-to-GDP ratio remained stable at 20.8 per cent. However, the portion of debt due for repayment within the next 12 months has increased to 50.5 per cent of India's foreign exchange reserves, up from 47.3 per cent in the previous quarter.
