India economic deficit and debt trends

Overview

India’s economic indicators for the 2026-27 fiscal year show widening deficits and rising debt. In the first quarter, the current account deficit expanded to $4.2 billion, driven by an increased merchandise trade deficit due to higher petroleum and lubricant costs. During this period, the Balance of Payments shifted to an $8.1 billion deficit, influenced by $5 billion in capital outflows, including a $9.6 billion net outflow in foreign portfolio investment.

By the end of the June 2026 quarter, India’s external debt rose to $778.2 billion, an increase of $15.4 billion from the previous quarter. While the debt-to-GDP ratio held steady at 20.8 per cent, the portion of debt requiring repayment within 12 months increased to 50.5 per cent of foreign exchange reserves. Additionally, the fiscal deficit reached ₹7.10 lakh crore during the first five months of the fiscal year, representing 41.9 per cent of the annual target.
