India Rolls Out Digital e-OCI Cards, Removes Fresh Card Renewal Requirement

The Government of India has simplified the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) process. OCI cardholders no longer need to apply for a fresh physical card after obtaining a new passport or changing personal details. Updates can be submitted online through the OCI Services Portal, with an e‑OCI card generated for download. Biometric details must be updated at an Indian Mission, FRRO office, or an international airport for passport changes made after age 20, and updates must be made within 90 days or incur a US$25 penalty.

In parallel, a new e‑OCI facility permits holders to store a digital version of their OCI card on a mobile device. Existing physical cards remain valid, but from 8 July 2026 new applicants will receive only the digital e‑OCI. The digital card can be presented alongside the passport at immigration checkpoints and participating airlines, aiming to make travel documentation more accessible for the Indian diaspora.
