India rooftop solar adoption grows under PM Surya Ghar scheme

The Government of India’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is driving significant growth in residential rooftop solar adoption. Launched in February 2024 with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme aims to support solar installations for one crore households. As of July 2026, approximately 39.72 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed, benefiting over 48 lakh households. Notably, over 18.93 lakh beneficiaries reported receiving zero electricity bills during at least one billing period.

The program provides central subsidies based on system capacity: ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, and an additional ₹18,000 for the third kW, totaling a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more. This financial support is designed to help households generate up to 300 units of electricity per month, reducing reliance on the grid.

In Kerala, residential apartment complexes are also adopting the technology to mitigate rising grid tariffs. For example, the Vintage View complex in Thiruvananthapuram installed a 20 kW system using Adani Solar modules and a Sungrow inverter. The installation, managed by Wattsun Energy India, is expected to generate roughly 2,400 kWh per month, with estimated annual savings between ₹230,000 and ₹288,000 and a payback period of three to four years.
