India seeks WTO consultations over US quartz tariffs

India has requested consultations with the United States through the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding new safeguard duties imposed on quartz surface products. These engineered stone slabs, made from silica and resin binders, are subject to steep tariffs of up to 50 per cent on shipments exceeding specific quotas, effective August 15, 2026.

The tariffs are expected to significantly impact the quartz industry in Andhra Pradesh, a major Indian hub for quartz resources. The region provides materials used in solar glass, semiconductors, and fused quartz. Exporters note that the Nellore district alone accounts for approximately 17.47 per cent of India’s total quartz exports in 2024-25.

Industry experts suggest that the new duties may force exporters to shift their focus away from the US market toward other nations such as China, Japan, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
