India sees mixed fuel market response as crude oil prices fall on US‑Iran talks

Crude oil prices fell sharply after statements from former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting an imminent peace agreement with Iran. Brent crude dropped below $100 a barrel and WTI fell to around $92, marking the lowest levels since early May. The anticipated deal was expected to ease tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil supplies, and to relieve India's energy market by lowering import costs.

However, despite the global price decline, India's retail fuel prices rose. Petrol rose by about ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre, marking the fourth consecutive increase. Analysts noted that domestic price adjustments lag behind crude movements and that policy and tax components also influence retail rates.

The contrasting outcomes highlight the complexity of translating lower crude prices into immediate consumer savings in India.
