India sees surge in student suicides while Indiana emphasizes belonging for youth mental health

India recorded 14,488 student suicides in 2024, averaging nearly 40 deaths per day, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Maharashtra led with 1,909 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, together accounting for about 43% of all student suicides. The overall suicide count rose 11.6% over five years, with student suicides increasing 15.7% in the same period.

In the United States, Indiana officials and community groups are focusing on protective factors that foster youth well‑being. Initiatives stress the importance of strong relationships, stable environments, sufficient sleep, nutrition and physical activity. Schools are expanding counseling, social‑emotional learning and mentorship programs, while community organizations promote inclusive, supportive settings to help young people thrive.

Both reports highlight the growing concern over youth mental health, underscoring the need for preventative measures and supportive networks.
