India Shifts from Technology Follower to Leader Under Modi
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh said India has moved from a technology follower to a technology leader over the past twelve years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government’s policy focus on science, private‑sector participation and innovation has built a strong ecosystem that supports economic growth, strategic capability and public services.
India is now active in frontier areas such as space, nuclear energy, quantum technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and clean energy. In the space sector, the number of private startups has risen from single digits to more than 400 and the space economy is valued at about USD 9 billion, with expectations of rapid expansion.
These developments are positioned as part of the vision for a "Viksit Bharat @2047," aiming to make India a major global innovation hub.
