India signs ₹4,106 crore defence deals for satellite and torpedoes

India’s Ministry of Defence has signed two contracts totaling approximately ₹4,106 crore ($432 million) to procure indigenous military technology. These agreements are part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign imports.

The first contract, valued at ₹2,563 crore, was awarded to New Space India Limited (NSIL) for the GSAT-7C communication satellite. Designed and manufactured in India, the satellite is intended to provide the Indian Air Force with a secure, resilient, and seamless communication network to coordinate aircraft, ground stations, and other operational assets.

The second contract, worth ₹1,543 crore, was granted to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy. Developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), the Varunastra is a ship-launched anti-submarine weapon featuring advanced maneuvering capabilities designed to engage enemy submarines at long ranges.
