India indigenous military technology procurement
Overview
India’s Ministry of Defence has entered into major contracts to procure indigenous military technology as part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which seeks to enhance domestic manufacturing and decrease dependency on foreign imports.
Previous agreements included a ₹2,563 crore contract to New Space India Limited for the GSAT-7C communication satellite to provide the Indian Air Force with secure communication networks, and a ₹1,543 crore contract to Bharat Dynamics Limited for Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes to bolster naval anti-submarine capabilities.
Expanding its focus on maritime modernization, the Ministry of Defence has awarded a $68 million contract to BrahMos Aerospace to upgrade aging naval vessels. This project involves installing fire control systems and launchers compatible with BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles on Rajput-class destroyers and Vir-class frigates. The modernization effort targets Soviet-era Project 1241 design vessels, including the destroyers Ranveer and Ranvijay. This initiative is expected to significantly increase the domestic replacement rate for these critical naval systems.
