India strengthens NavIC navigation system with NVS-03 satellite

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully placed the NVS-03 satellite into its designated geosynchronous orbit. This follows the completion of the final orbit-raising manoeuvre, marking a significant advancement for India’s regional satellite navigation system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation).

Launched on October 30, 2026, via a GSLV-F18 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the NVS-03 is the third satellite in the second-generation NVS series. The satellite is designed to augment the NavIC constellation, improving positioning and timing services while enhancing compatibility with various navigation devices.

NavIC provides coverage across India and an area extending approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond its borders. The system supports critical applications including maritime operations, railway services, emergency response, and smartphone navigation. Strengthening this domestic network is viewed by experts as a step toward technological independence and national security, reducing reliance on foreign systems like the US-developed GPS during geopolitical tensions.
