ISRO NVS-03 satellite launch mission
Overview
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite on October 30, 2026, at 11:51 PM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Utilizing the GSLV-F18 launch vehicle, the mission marked the 20th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). Prior to the launch, ISRO monitored weather conditions due to the forecast of Cyclone Arnab, which threatened to impact preparations near the Andhra Pradesh Yanam coast.
NVS-03 is the third satellite in a second-generation series designed to strengthen the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system. The deployment aims to ensure service continuity and enhance India’s time sovereignty by utilizing an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured units. This satellite also introduces the L1 frequency band to complement existing L5 and S-bands, a move intended to improve compatibility with civilian devices such as smartphones and smartwatches.
Following the launch, the approximately 2,232 to 2,250 kg satellite was injected into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. By November 4, 2026, ISRO confirmed the successful completion of the final orbit-raising manoeuvre, placing the satellite into its designated geosynchronous orbit.
The NavIC system provides positioning, navigation, and timing services across India and a region extending 1,500 kilometers beyond its borders. The successful deployment of NVS-03 restores the NavIC constellation to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites, reducing reliance on foreign systems like GPS and addressing previous technical setbacks. The enhanced system supports both civilian sectors and strategic military operations, including maritime coordination and missile guidance.
