India students launch protests for education reforms

A wave of student protests, dubbed the ‘Gen Alpha uprising,’ is spreading across at least 10 Indian states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. Children in government-run schools are demanding urgent reforms to address dilapidated infrastructure, teacher shortages, and a lack of basic amenities such as clean water, electricity, and functional toilets.

In Samuhi Bhatpurwa village, Uttar Pradesh, 122 students—some as young as six—refused to enter their classrooms until authorities provided assurances for a new school building. The current structure remains partially in rubble following a wall collapse in 2023 that severely injured a student. The protest concluded after Block Education Officer Deepak Awasthi promised that a new building would be constructed soon.

These demonstrations highlight systemic challenges within India’s massive education system, where many rural government schools struggle to meet the standards set by the Right to Education Act. The movement follows previous Gen Z protests regarding unemployment and examination leaks, signaling an increasing trend of younger generations challenging institutional neglect.
