India protests Iranian missile attack on UAE tankers in Hormuz, killing Indian seafarer

Iran launched cruise‑missile strikes on two United Arab Emirates oil tankers, MT Mombasa and MT Al Bahiyah, as they transited the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks ignited fires on both vessels, killed one Indian crew member and injured eight others – six Indians and two Ukrainians – among a crew of 46.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Iranian diplomats, including Deputy Chief of Mission Mohammad Javad Hosseini, demanding explanations and expressing grave concern for the safety of Indian nationals working on international shipping routes. The Indian embassy in the UAE coordinated assistance for the injured and the family of the deceased.

The UAE defence ministry condemned the strike as a breach of international law and warned of its right to self‑defence. The United States responded with airstrikes on Iranian military sites, resumed a maritime blockade of Iranian ports, and announced a proposal to charge ships using the waterway, further heightening regional tensions.

The incident prompted flight cancellations, travel advisories from the UK and the US, and a rise in global oil prices as markets reacted to the heightened risk to a key energy chokepoint.
